The purple plate

Another 108 bullion knots are laid on a paper plate. This time in three shades of purple and if you look closely you can see I used three strands of DMC each time. The last paper plate in this series is already pinpricked and 10 bullion knots are laid down.

Time to start stitching again!

Enjoy yourself and I'll see you soon.

Still working

The last few days I've been working on new pieces for the exhibition but in a slower pace. The Soul Food-tartan was made first, no stitching just playing with paper. It was one of the ideas that were jotted down while being in the french knots-frenzy. The basic layer was painted with watercolour, the blue and purple are strips of mulberry paper. The white lines are drawn with a Posca-pen. Lines intrigue me and therefore playing with the idea of tartan isn't that far fetched in my mind.

My first exhibition was with a lot of paper plates. To connect the first and the second exhibition as a continuation of my adventure with needle and thread I decided to make four paper plates. In the picture above you can see the three main colours of Soul Food on a plate.

The second one is in three different shades of blue. Those two are ready and currently I'm working on the purple one.

That's all for now ... time to get stitching again!

The portrait, the final post

I did it! The portrait is finished. The eyes were a bit nerve wrecking but they look allright to me now. Seven different shades of blues are used. The french knots are made of two strands of DMC with 5 wraps and therefore almost 300 mtr of thread is used to fill this portrait. It took over 3 weeks to make these zillion french knots, there were some long stitching days. The time spent on this portrait is over 100 hours. So this might well be a once-in-a-life-time project. Still I'm over the moon with it and accept all the flaws that it has.

One last picture from a different angle. I hope you enjoyed watching "the birth" of this portrait as I have.

Have a fantastic thursday!

A portrait XX!

And although procrastination has set in, a little bit of stitching is done each day. Only the eyes remain. Three options I thought of and tomorrow, while attending class, I will make these options. That will help me to decide which one will fit best. If things work out the portrait might be ready tomorrow evening!!!!

Enjoy your evening!

A portrait XX

One of the last updates. Slowly but surely we are getting to the finish line, although it is in a snail pace. It is also time to make the decision about the eyes. Still doubting that part. It gives me the creeps because they have to be right or the whole project might look crooked. Time for some procrastination .. :-))

Have a lovely evening!

A portrait XIX

Slowly it because truly a face. And you know what, I was already able to put some colours aside since they won't be needed anymore ... Now that's a milestone!

Hope you enjoy watching this project as much as I do working on it.

Have a great weekend!

A portrait XIII

Two nights and two mornings of stitching have been added. And this part of the project probably will be ready sometime next week.

Today the blackberry vinegar is bottled and since there was a leftover of blackberries, a blackberry-crumble was baked ... yummy!

Enjoy yourself and I'll be back soon again.

A thank you-note to Shannon

Last night Shannon posted this picture on Flickr. Loved the image, it reminded me of my favorite cookbook with all its yummy recipes.

At 7.15 all my men had left the building on their way to school and work. Since I had a slight headache I decided to read a few pages in a book of May Sarton, my latest favorite author. Somehow she inspired me to start working on the portrait and I happily stitched for almost two hours. Still Shannon's image was on my mind and I felt it was time for action. There is an abundance of blackberries due to the sunny summer of this year. So the decision to pick some blackberries was easily made.

Took a 5 ltr. bucket and started walking towards Gammeldam because for sure there were blackberries to pick there. My bucket was about half filled when some drops of rain fell down. Oh, it will blow over was my thought. And as one does, me, had left her raincoat at home. Unfortunately within minutes I got totally soaked which wasn't the end of the world because it made me take a d-tour with the intention to get home quickly. That didn't happen because along side this field there were even more big blackberries to be picked.  To make a long story short I came home totally soaked with a full bucket of blackberries while the sun was out and about again!

Changed clothes, took my bike and biked to a plumtree and picked also a bucket of wild plums. When I got home again a neighbour offered the remaining apples of her three apple-trees because she was going on a sailingtrip. This was my produce day today. A short stop at the supermarket was needed before heading to the kitchen. At the moment 2 ltrs of yummy blackberrie-vinegar are cooling down. The rest of the produce have to wait til tomorrow, I'm beat.

And this leaves me to say: Thank you, Shannon for the inspiration!

A portrait XII

Even though I feel like I don't have that much time to stitch, I make sure that every minute counts. Slowly the face fills up and the hair is all done already. At this point I don't think it is necessary to re-do the triangle on the right but I just wait and see till the face is totally ready before coming to a conclusion about it.

Time to start working again. Hope to see you soon again.

A portrait XI

First I did the part under the eye but unfortunately I ran out of thread and there was no way I could get to the local artshop before it closed since I was in another country. Therefore I decided to start on the cheek triangle and managed to finish it. At the moment I'm not really sure about the blue from the ear and the blue from the cheek but I'll carry on anyway. Have to see the whole picture before I start making a decision of re-doing the cheek.

Time to start stitching again!

Enjoy your evening.

A portrait

The feeling of summer holiday has passed. Our youngest started school already and the oldest starts next week, lots of organizing and stuff that needs to be done and the temperature dropped 10 degrees.
But time to stitch has flown out of the window and so just a little progress the last two days. Hope to get something done this evening because tomorrow I hardly will be home.

Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see you soon again.

A portrait

Today I worked very intensely and for many hours but the progress, I dare to say, is enormous. Very happy how things progressed but fair is fair. Tomorrow there will not be that much progress since I have to leave the house and be in the world again .. yikes .. lol

So enjoy your evening and I'll be back tomorrow with only small changes.

A portrait VIII

Lots of hours and therefore lots of progress. Hope to have the hair ready by the end of the week. Tomorrow the temperature will be rising to 35 degrees celsius. Not really a temperature to do a lot of running around and therefore lots of time to stitch in the shade!

Enjoy yourself!

A portrait VII

Not the best photograph in the world today but it shows the progress made in the last 24 hrs. The progress is slow despite the fact that I needle at least 4 hrs a day but it can't be helped, french knots simply take a lot of time.

See you tomorrow again!

A portrait VI

Another update on my portrait-project. It is really exciting each time another small part is filled up with french knots.

Time to start stitching again.

Enjoy the start of a new week.

A portrait IV

Another day with progress. Up til now I used 40 mtrs of 6-stranded DMC.  I can really notice that the portrait starts to become heavier and I'm not even halfway.

Have a great start of your weekend!
