Soul Food (part 19)

The silence of winter.

The freshness of spring.

The warmth of summer.

The abundance of fall.

When the circumstances change so does the food.

Have a lovely day.

Soul Food (part 18)

The journey of this symbol started long ago. I think I was around eight years old when I decided that I wanted to have a very long life, a very deep felt intention which I still have. When I was nineteen I met for the first time age-discrimination, I was told that I was too old for a part-time job and had not enough experience, huh. It felt totally ridiculous too me. Somehow I met this behaviour often and that made/makes me rebellious.

Recently I have been thinking a lot about age again because first my friend turned forty. (Polly and Julie, thanks again for your help, she loved her gift.) And just last week B turned thirty with all of her own feelings about this special birthday.

So I drew a path that walks to the horizon. The media is feeding us that the youth has the future. Is this true? Not to me, everybody has a future until they die. Culturally we stereotype 'old people' as bagage, it does have a negative sound to say the least. But who decides when you are old? Who puts limits on life because of age? We are. Do you want too? I don't.

When you look at the drawing it looks like the path gets smaller, that's an optical illusion. The road doesn't get narrower. Life is stilling giving you as many options as ever. Different ones, that's not because we are old but because we have already so much experience.

How do I beat this cultural sniper? By giving myself something new. New can be something very small or just turn everything upside down. Of course there will always be people who make remarks and this will give a nice discussion.

Luckily I'm not the only one who is trying to beat this troll. Liz from Fragrant Muse gave some really good examples. Julie from Moments of perfect clarity had her own discovery of growth recently. Than there is Mary of Beauty amongst the weeds who cleared her path to become a better photographer. One more for the road. Julie from It's just jules with a post which gives everybody a kick in the butt. Now I'm pretty sure that there are many more examples, I would love to read them too. So if you have one let me know. Have an idea, I start a collection for those rainy days.

Have fun today!!!

Yes, I did it. This one is mine.

This green belt is mine. Last night, after almost two years of training, I succeeded to get my green belt in taekwondo. The last few weeks I have been practicing all the different taeguks and techniques. In the theory-exam I had 0 mistakes, yes. I'm really happy all of this. There is one downside though I have to write this while laying in my bed. During the fight last night, one of the disciplines, I got hurt and I can't walk at the moment because of an 'illegal' attack on my ankle. But this will pass and my green belt stays. Now the training-season has come to an end but will start again in August.

I want to thank all the visitors of Landanna for stopping by and everyone who held the crossed fingers and toes crossed.

See you next week, but before I leave you I have another confession to make. I love Disco underworld because all the great interviews with artists I otherwise maybe never would have met. Now Stacey has another fabulous idea, you can read all about it if you click on the picture below the about me section.

Have a great weekend and say hello to Stacey for me. Bye.

The five questions of B

Last friday B answered the five questions she was given by Sussanah. Today it is my turn to answer the questions B gave me.
So here we go.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning?
The very first thing is hearing the voice of my husband who is trying to let me now that the alarmclock rang.

What's the best thing about blogging?
Sharing in every sense of the word. Two and a half year ago I started reading Elsita's blog and I have no idea how many posts she wrote about the good things of blogging. But she succeeded, I started my own blog. First very privately, didn't tell a soul, about six months later I felt the need to tell someone, so I told Elsa. This is what happend. There was no way back.

What's your first memory?
My first memory is that I'm sitting on a large windowsill looking outside. I can still see the warm yellow curtains and feel the warmth of the sun. Somehow this made a big impression because I was about two and a half/three years old. Unfortunately I can't remember what I was thinking, I would like to know though.

Do you have a book/film/piece of music that you specially like? What is it and what does it mean to you?
It's impossible to choose between books because there are so many. Choosing a piece of music that's even more difficult, memories and music are so connected. That leaves film. Now I have to admit that if I really try hard I might go once a year to the movies. So not many options in this department. Which one will I choose: Out of Africa, no I fell asleep, I was simply to tired. Something romantic: Bridges of Madison County, this is a good option because I also read the book later on. Or Brokeback Mountain, I have seen this on a couple of times. Bridget Jones diary, no I liked Colin Firth more in the TV-series of the BBC Pride and Prejudice. A movie with a message: Pay it forward, liked the idea, loved the book but not the way the movie ended. Maybe a movie with music, let's see. Saturday Night Fever, no, didn't like it. Grease, liked it because I went with some girlfriends and had great time. Had nothing to do with the movie though. Dirty dancing, Patrick Swayze had a nice backside but that is a too thin to become the best movie. There were more music-movies and dancing but I can't remember their names. That leaves me to one option. The movie ONCE. Loved it, still listen to the music from it and the voice of Glen Hansard is one that must be heard. So my favorite movie is: ONCE.

What's your favourite season of the year? Why?
Spring is my favourite season because of the freshness in the air, the warmth of the sun and life that starts a new. If you ever need to travel to Denmark, take spring when the rape is in full bloom. Or just look at the pictures below.

This is spring to me!!!!

That brings to the end of this post. Answered all of B's questions faithfully, enjoyed myself and I hope you did too.

See you tomorrow. And please don't forget, keep your fingers crossed. PLEASE!!!

Soul Food (part 17)

These two blocks are special. The one on the right is a house as you can see. Up til now I lived at 16 different places. Last year while we were painting, putting the wooden floor in and cleaning the place up in the latest edition something funny happend. My husband and I started talking about how long we would live here and what we would want for our new new house. Really, we still had to move in. So the relation house - home is different for me than for someone who grew up in one place. The word home for me is a feeling of contentment. When I'm really busy with something that holds meaning to me and I accept all my experiences (instead of worrying about ....) I get a warm, awesome feeling. It is that feeling that I call home.

Now the second one. If there is one word that fits really well with me it is homemade. You know already a part of my homemadepassion but there is something else that I haven't mentioned before. My other passion is cooking and baking. This started long ago when I read the little house books and Heidi. Just loved to read the passages were they were making dinner and the passages of eating, I ended up in the kitchen each time and my skills have grown ever since. Five years ago I was really very happy with the skills I had been building up over the years because I found out that my body was very sick. Which means that for the rest of my life I need to stick to a diet, I have celiac disease. The transition was made very easily and for me it is easy enough to stick to it because I feel so much better.

And now that I mentioned cooking I want to share with you my favorite cookbook of all times. (I can't let the opportunity pass.) It is called Country Harvest and written by Rosamond Richardson and Linda Burgess. Do you want the recipe for the best blackberry-vinegar? Yeah, you do. Well, here it is:

4 tsp of clove
2 pieces of cinnamon about 7,5 cm long
6 dl of organic applevinegar
1 kg sugar
1 kg blackberries

Put everything in a pan except the blackberries and let it boil softly until 5 minutes after the sugar has dissolved. Add the blackberries and let them boil in the liquid very gently for 10 minutes. Let the fluid cool down, put it through a sieve and now the last fase of this easy recipe, to put the vinegar in a bottle. You can use it as a salatdressing, to marinate meat or to add some delicious flavour to your own homemade gravy.

So now you know what I will be doing in August and September, berry picking.

This are all the revelations for today. Hope you will have a fantastic day and I'll see you tomorrow.

Soul Food (part 16)

Today I want to give you a new overview. This Soul Food piece is growing slowly but surely. Althought it will be another couple of weeks until it is ready, a new milestone is passed. The milestone is to make an overviewpicture and still fit every symbol in. That is no longer possible for me, of cause I can take it from a larger distance but than the soft colors are fading away. So I need to learn to take photographs differently and glue them digitally together. A new challenge I have to master before the time I do the next overview.

During the rest of the week I will tell you about the two blocks that are very special to me together with something delicious, about the challenge from B and if all goes well something completely different but very exciting for me on friday. Keep your fingers crossed because I'm gonna need that.

Hope you will have a wonderful day filled with your own special creative endaevours.

Soul Food (part 15)

Last night while I was thinking about the symbols I made I really looked forward to writing this post, I felt so happy about the latest two symbols I made. But today I woke up in a bluesy mood and so the two symbols I thought about last night have to wait.

Today it is the day of the teardrop. Teardrops are very precious. The largest part of a teardrop is water and water contains air. When your sad/hurt or just feel the need to cry and you give yourself permission to cry the water will cleanse your soul, it gives you air/room to face another experience of life. Maybe this is why small children cry easily, they still want to clean up immediately until they have learned to keep it in and control these situations for the sake of others. Maybe we should change this cultural thing, what do you think?

Hope to hear from you, in the meantime have a lovely day.

Soul Food (part 14)

Today's post is inspired by the list of simple things I made earlier this week. It was than that I realized that music and quotes were not included yet. So that is changed now and two dear blocks are added too my Soul Food project.

Hope you will have a fantastic weekend, see you monday.

Soul Food (part 13)

Today I want to show you my tulip. Tulip stands for friendship. Maybe it is just a Dutch thing to do but when you visit a friend especially in spring you take with you tulips. A short post today but I leave with the best song about tulips, enjoy!

Have a not so rainy day!!

Soul food (part 12)

Today I want to show you another Blocks of experience, a symbol I made before. Yesterday at the hidden seed I found part of a poem and because it fits in so well with the Soul Food project I decided to share this poem with you.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

Samuel Ullman

Have a wonderful day.

Soul food (part 11)

Yesterday evening, after hours of clearing out and cleaning, I dared myself to sit down and try again. This may sound strange but I was a bit nervous when I started. The first few stitches didn't work out but I didn't want to give in and I'm glad I didn't. Because now I can show you my finished blocks about the communication process which I started during the weekend.

I started symbolizing the communication process while I was making my two books, Mystery and Listening to the wind. In the first block you see four different stitches in four different colors representing the energy-signature of four people. In the second block these four people are trying the enter an open door, someone to communicate with.

In the next small block you see the person who opens up connects with one of the others.

This last photograph is a detailed picture of the large block on the left called dialogue. When you communicate with someone you send out a mixture of energy. The energy of the sound of your voice, loud or soft. The energy of your body, the way you stand, sit, using your arms and so on. And of course the energy of the words you use because the same message can be brought in several levels of intensity. All of this is going on between the two individuals, with their own energysignature and their own emotional understanding of the words used, who are interacting with each other.

While I'm explaining all this in words I think is it any wonder there is so much miscommunication?

Hope this makes any sense too you all. If you feel I missed something or you don't have clue what I'm talking about please let me know because a post about communication shouldn't be miscommunicated.

Have fun today.

Something in between

Last weekend something really strange happend. You all know what a writersblock is, the writer can't get a sentence right no matter how hard she/he is trying. Well now, for the first time in my whole life I experienced a stitchblock. It started friday while I tried to do a piece with felt. Started 4 times and each time I could start anew. And still it wasn't the way I wanted it. So I thought well lets start with something else. I started with a new symbol, used a stitch I did at least 50 thousand times before, but it wouldn't come out right. After almost three and a half hour I gave up.

On saturday the same happend but I gave up after an hour or so. Instead of stitching I started cleaning closets. Have to say I had a wonderful time with it. On sunday I started with cleaning closets again but in the evening I tried again to do some work. I managed to make a start with a symbol in french knots but after about 25 knots the same happend again. I stopped.

So now it is monday and I have absolutely nothing to show you guys. I hope this stitchblock disappears soon because I want to move on. In the meantime I have to ask you to be patient.

Thank you all for giving such lovely comments last week. It is so much fun to read them, especially when I read how each time you have another favorite which has more meaning to you than the last favorite. Julie even used the word cool. That really made my day because embroidery and cool is not match made easily. So thank you all for stopping by and I'm gonna try to get my needle working again.

Have a lovely day

Soul Food (part 10 )

Today another overview because I still had a few blocks from last weekend to show and the blocks I made this week.

Last night I realized that the part I was finishing up you could read like a comic-book which describes my meditation-proces. Start reading at the tree above the candle. This tree is always on my left side and stands for meeting place. The horse is standing behind me on the left side for me it's just a comforting feeling that he is there. Meditation is for me a way to get my spiral of life in order again. The fallen tree-trunk is the place where I sit down and look over the water and see the mountains. The dark forest on the right I haven't embroidered. It is like on the left I have a space I know and feel myself very comfortable, on the right is the unknown.

And this is my train, the one that brings me there were I need to go, my red thread, my anchor for over 15 years already. The steam he gives is a cloud filled with dreams. For me dreams and meditation are a great way to communicate.

And now the last two blocks. Look at these two, they look very different and you know what they are made in the same buttonholestitch. For me that is very cool.

That's all for today.
Have a day filled with wonder.

Soul food (part 9)

Today's piece is the circle of life. A similar circle I did on my first painting, shown in my first post. This circle stands for the four directions of the wind, the different phases in life, the stages of every project. The circle can also be seen as the path the soul needs to travel. But every now and than the soul wanders off the circle by choice or an experience. Later on when things don't feel good anymore it has to find it's way back too the circle in order to feel I'm on the right track again.

This piece is made in a wonderful blue color woollen felt stitched on the cloth with a buttonhole stitch.

That's all for today. Hope you will have a fantastic day.

Soul Food (part 8)

Good morning everyone. A fantastic, long weekend filled with lots and lots of sunshine has come to an end but a new week lies ahead. So let's start. Today just one picture but with four small blocks. On the left below is the peace sign, a symbol you probably all know, made in a backstitch variation. On the right below my version of helleristninger symbols, it is representing the elk. It is made in the same stitch as it's partner on the left.

On the right above you'll see the mysterious lynx in a cross-stitch and than the last one for today. You can see what it is, right a tree and it symbols wind, my kind of logic. It is made with a millefleurstitch and a backstitch. This symbol is from the book Listen to the wind.

Now I hurry back to work because an exam is waiting for me and some studytime is planned for today.

See you tomorrow have a wonderful day.
