Today some pictures I took of my embroidery books. I have a small collection of craftbooks and most projects are not for me, still I can learn from the craftwomenship and draw inspiration from them.
This picture above is from a book published in 1980, bought this book at our local thriftshop because of this project. This hassock is made with pieces of felt which are embroidered. How many symbols could I incorporate do you think?
Here a detailed picture.
This is a picture of a wall hanging from a dutch book, dated 1973. Fell in love with this piece because of the various techniques that are used and hoped one day I could make a piece like this.
Have a lovely day where the past and your envisioned future will bring you today.
Some of you already know that I was and still am totally blown away by the spoons of Cathy made with the paper maché technique. At the moment I saw them, all these months ago, I found a moment of total clarity (Thanks Julie). Every piece you read each day has an effect on your being and therefore it is, to me, very important to be aware of this process.
So as you know me, I have been writing a lot about it in my journals and last summer this idea came up. I made a number of cards with lessons I learned while making Soul Food, I knitted around a strawberry carton and together with the chopsticks I can eat carefully. Now something really funny happened the other day, I found this in my mailbox. A very big smile turned up on my face and a joy in my heart as you can imagine.
Today I have a drawing for you from my journal. It is one of the thoughts I had while I was working on the book Worlds. Never realized before so intensely how many rules there are written and unwritten to make this society function. In the drawing you can see the rules men get from women, women get from men and how that ties the possibility of free movement.
Another week has come and gone. I'm working really hard to finish the give-away presents and hopefully next week I can sent two of them home. Thanks for stopping by this week and all the lovely comments and emails. This week I compared them to christmas presents, each present is fantastic, thank you for all the love you sent me.
Have a great weekend filled with creativity and a burst of laughter.
Today the page were this whole idea came from, the last page of the book. There are many more worlds, like the world of the poor or rich, the world of fashion, the world of politics, the world of the movies, the world of the future, the blogosphere, etc.. Each world has it's own unwritten rules. It is like the aunt of Elizabeth in Pride & Prejudice said: "We moved in very different circles."
The last page of the book means also the last song of Bryan Adams, for now. The song today is the song that got me on the path of my new musical love, it is called: Have you ever loved a woman? Again a live version, just love live versions more than special made videos.
Now one last view on the book of Worlds before I leave you to travel again on your own in your own world. The book is now put together and is totally finished.
The idea for my next project I got last summer when I found the magazines Classic Rock, Kerrang, Guitar and Q in a thrift-shop. While reading them I realized in what a totally different world these musicians live in. Since I am in the mood to create another book I have been thinking about this subject. My conclusion is that almost every profession has it's own set of rules. I know, it isn't a big revelation, on the other hand it is an explanation why a lot of people stick to one profession. It takes a lot of trial and error if you want to shift to a totally different line of work. Not only do you need to learn a new trade but it takes awhile before you are aware about the unwritten rules of it.
For this project I use totally different materials than I'm used to. I chose woollen thread, jute and leather, in a way to create the same experience as if I'm learning a new trade.
The photo below shows the title page.
Since finishing Soul Food, which felt kind of sad, I needed some different music to shift my mood. Had no idea but than I stumbled upon Bryan Adams and I have to admit my heart of music has fallen in love. Before I just knew one song of him, The summer of 69, that isn't much when you realize the man made 16 albums over the last 32 years. So to express this new found love I decided to post each day of this project a song of Bryan. This is the first one with the Who and it is called Behind blue eyes.
Well it is no secret that music is VERY important to me. So that is why I decided to make a short list of artists that kept me company the last few months.
Why do I like music? I like music for their lyrics, for their guitars, for the voices I hear, for the emotions expressed, for the joy the artists seem to have on stage, for the memories who are attached to them, for helping me through the turbulations of life, for the comfort and the joy. for helping me travelling home, I just have to love music, my life depends on it.
The first person I want to thank is Jim Houser, without his inspiration this project would never have seen daylight. Here you can read an old interview and see some of his work. If you have trouble to find something to put on your christmas list than I recommand you put Babel on it. This book is really fantastic, you can read about it here.
But I also want to thank all the people who came by and left a message.
Soul Food is about all that life has in store for me and all I have in store to give.
Soul Food is like a long letter which is never sent.
Soul Food is about finding peace.
Soul Food is about my love for taekwondo.
Soul Food is about the spices of life.
Let me tell you one last Soul Food mystery. For weeks I have been thinking about what makes life special. Each time the answer was relationships. Each relationship is different, each person brings something special yet to be noticed. Although feeling strongly about it, how was I to symbolize this special feeling.
Until I read this post at Domestic Sensualists I had no idea. But when I saw the tray of spices I couldn't have been more happy. I found my symbol. Relationships are the spices of life. If you look closely to the symbol you can see that the small circles are embroidered in two different ways. The one in the center has both these stitches and make together a circle. There are two explanations for this.
In the first one the large circle is life in general, the small circles are random people, the circle in the middle is person you with whom you connect.
The second explanation of this symbol is that the large circle is a relationship between two people. The small circles are the different talents and habits each person brings to this relationship. The circle in the middle is their deepest connection, the moment they join their love and strenght for one another.
So thanks again Julie for your help to find the best symbols.
Wish you all a lovely day filled with your spices.
Soul Food is about combining life's lessons, craftmanship and perseverance.
Soul Food is about love in all its forms and all its varieties.
Soul Food is about realizing what the end of the rainbow is giving me.
Soul Food set me in an upward movement.
Soul Food made me realize I am ready to take the next flight.
As you all know this is the final week of Soul Food. I'm very excited (couldn't sleep last night) about this week and all the stuff I want to share with you. To make it just as excited for you I decided to do a give-away. What do you have to do? Just leave a comment this week and tell me about your favorite symbol. I will make an object, haven't decided yet what it wil be, with the symbol you choose. If you have a symbol of your own, share it with me and I will try to do my best to make it. If you have more than one, just let me know. Next monday I will announce the winner, who than has to be patient because I still have to make the present.
This is all for today. I hope to see you tomorrow again. Have a fabulous start of your week.
